Materials

  • Worsted weight 100 percent cotton yarn (95 yds/56.7 grams per ball): 1 ball orange sherbet #131
  • Size 7 (4.5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch markers (2)
  • Tapestry needle

    9 sts = 2 inches/5cm in Stockinette stitch

    Pattern Notes

    Cloth is sized so that it may be knitted from 1 ball of ombre yarn (95 yds/56.7 grams). If you use a solid-colored yarn (120 yds/70.9 grams), you will have more left over.
         With yarn in front, slip first stitch of every row as if to purl, take yarn to back between tips of needles, complete row.

    Special Abbreviation

    Knit, lift and pass (KLP): K3, lift first st and pass it over sts 2 and 3.

         Row 1 (RS): K2, *KLP, k5, rep from *, end last rep k2 instead of k5. (Dec 1 st per rep.)
         Row 2: P1, *k1, [p1, yo, p1] in next 2 sts, k1, p3, rep from *, end last rep p1 instead of p3. (Original st count restored.)
         Row 3 and 5: Knit.
         Rows 4 and 6: Purl.
         Row 7: K6, *KLP, k5,  rep from *, end last rep k6 instead of k5.  (Dec 1 st per rep.)
         Row 8: P5, *k1, [p1, yo, p1] in next 2 sts, k1, p3, rep from *, end last rep p5 instead of p3. (Original st count restored.)
         Rows 9–12: Rep Rows 3–6.
         Rep Rows 1–12 for pattern.

    Facecloth

    Cast on 43 sts.
         Rows 1–7: Beginning and ending with a WS row, sl 1, knit across. (4 ridges of garter st)
         Row 8 (RS): Sl 1, k3, pM, knit, inc 4 sts across next 35 sts, pM, k4. (47 sts)
         Row 9: Sl 1, k3, p39, k4.
         Row 10: Sl 1, knit across.
         Row 11: Sl 1, k3, p39, k4.
         Row 12: Sl 1, k3 (border); k2, *KLP, k5, rep from *, end last rep k2 instead of k5; k4 (border). (42 sts)
         Row 13: Sl 1, k3; p1, *k1, [p1, yo, p1] in next 2 sts, k1, p3, rep from * end last rep p1 instead of p3; k4. (47 sts)
         Rows 14–17: Rep Rows 10 and 11.
         Row 18: Sl 1, k3; k6, *KLP, k5, rep from *, end last rep k6 instead of k5; k4. (43 sts)
         Row 19: Sl 1, k3; p5, *k1, [p1, yo, p1] in next 2 sts, k1, p3, rep from *, end last rep p5 instead of p3; k4. (47 sts)
         Rows 20–23: [Rep Rows 10 and 11] twice.
         Rows 24–63: Rep [Rows 12–23] 3 times, then work [Rows 12–15] once.
         Row 64: Sl 1, k3; dec 4 sts evenly spaced bet markers; k4. Remove markers. (43 sts)
         Rows 65–70: Sl 1, knit across.
         On next row, sl first st, then bind off all sts knitwise.
